What is the human impact on the amazon rainforest?
Human activities have severely disturbed the amazon rainforest. Many acres have been lost each year to farming, logging, mining and other human endeavours. These activities could potentially eliminate the amazon rainforest and as worrying as that sounds it is real and currently occurring in the rainforest.
What is happening in terms of deforestation?
Deforestation is a horrible act of tearing down the wonderful tree’s in many of the rainforests today. Rainforests once covered 14% of the Earth surface and now they cover a mere 6%. Experts believe that if deforestation does not reduce now then within the next 40 years there will be little to no remains of rainforests. It uses chainsaws and bulldozers to cut down a large expanse of the rainforests surface. This wood is then used for things like furniture, timber etc. In the last 40 years an estimated 20% of the Amazon Rainforest has been cut down. The main cause of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is from human settlement. In nine years from 1991 to 2000 the total area of the Amazon rainforest cleared, rose from 415,000 to 587,000 km². Most of this lost land has been replaced with grass for cattle. In 2008, the Brazilian government announced that the rate that the Amazon was being destroyed had sped up during the time of the year that it normally slows down. In just five months in 2007, more than 3,200 square kilometres were deforested. The amazon continues to reduce in size from deforestation.
